There are four types of different sink installations that require different sink designs.
Undermount Sinks
Undermount sinks are a type of sink that attaches to the bottom of the countertop, offering a sleek and seamless appearance to your kitchen. Because undermount sinks mount below the countertop, there is no lip, so food and other debris can be wiped easily into the sink. Undermount sinks install using a combination of high-strength epoxy, silicone and metal anchors to attach the sink to the countertop.
Drop-in Sinks
Drop-in sinks are a type of sink designed to drop into an opening in the countertop. An appropriately sized hole is cut into the countertop surface allowing for sink installation. Once the sink is inserted into the countertop opening, metal clips or anchors secure the sink to the countertop. Silicone or acrylic caulking is applied around the lip of the sink to complete the installation. The difference in design between an undermount and drop-in is the drop-in sink normally has a rolled lip on the edge that sinks on the countertop.
Farmhouse / Apron Sinks
Apron sinks are also called farmhouse sinks. This type of sink design incorporates a large apron that drops down the front of the sink or cabinets. Of the sink types mentioned here, apron sinks are the most difficult to install because of the cabinet modifications required for proper installation.
Vessel Sinks
Vessel or top-mount sinks rest on the surface of your countertop. Supported by an applicable type of base, this sink mounting method eliminates the need to cut a large hole in your countertop surface because only a small hole for the drain is required. Advantages to this type of sink are mostly aesthetic, resulting from their cutting-edge design and the materials used to fabricate them, which include glass or marble bowls among others. Disadvantages to this type of sink are the costs required to purchase and install these sinks.
